A carbon credit is a unit of measurement that represents an emissions reduction or offset of greenhouse gases (GHG). Greenhouse gases, which are produced naturally and from man-made sources, are an integral component of the earth’s atmosphere. The scientific consensus is that man-made GHG emissions are a primary cause of climate change.Key industrial GHGs include carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide, and each have different impact levels with respect to climate change estimates. To streamline and commoditize carbon credits for purposes of market efficiency, all GHGs are converted to an equivalent ton of carbon dioxide. For instance, reducing one ton of methane emissions is equivalent to reducing 21 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.
