The Company
PowerSync Technologies operates a turn-key platform for controlling and optimising distributed energy resources for commercial and industrial customers. Their technology creates a digital marketplace to optimise returns from these assets with patent pending technology that delivers value from a mix of site-based optimisation and energy market bidding.
The Challenge
PowerSync Technologies aimed to streamline its market interface with the NEM to participate in frequency control (FCAS) markets for distributed energy resources. AEMO (Australian Energy Market Operator) market participation is complex, with a 5-minute dispatch of multiple volatile markets and onerous regulation requirements. Having established the bidding strategy on its platform, PowerSync needed a robust auto-bidding solution to support the profit maximisation of its assets while ensuring compliance and high operational efficiency.
The Solution
To address these challenges, PowerSync implemented a solution from Energy One’s suite of products with key components including:
- Automation: The enFlow product provides an automated process configured to the specific needs of PowerSync for routine auto-bidding of the distributed energy resources
- AEMO Integration: The EnergyOffer product integrates AEMO’s Electricity Market Management System (EMMS) across eight FCAS markets, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
- Control Dashboard: The enFlow dashboard provides a specifically configured dashboard for PowerSync to monitor system operation and take executive control where required.
The Implementation
The implementation process involved:
- Design Consulting: Energy One’s business analysts worked with PowerSync subject matter experts to understand and agree on the required business rules and processes for automation.
- Deployment: Energy One and PowerSync worked together to establish the operating environment including connectivity to the market and establishment of hardware and software environments.
- Configuration: Energy One’s business analysts configured automatic processes and dashboard requirements according to the agreed designs and requirements.
- Testing and Implementation: PowerSync and Energy One transitioned the solution into production following acceptance testing.
- Training and Support: Energy One provided training to PowerSync’s team ensuring they could maximise the benefits of the new system.
The Results
PowerSync achieved a smooth entry into the NEM for its distributed energy resource portfolio through the use of Energy One’s products for auto-bidding and NEM integration. The flexibility of the solution will ensure ongoing responsiveness to change and an ability to grow with the PowerSync portfolio.
Overview
PowerSync Technologies, an innovative new player in the Australian energy market, sought to streamline its operations in the National Electricity Market (NEM), bidding distributed energy resources in the Frequency Control Ancillary Services (FCAS) markets. To achieve this, PowerSync partnered with Energy One, leveraging two cutting-edge products – EnergyOffer and enFlow to implement a robust and flexible solution for the auto-bidding of NEM assets.
